Chapter Fifteen
Why in the holy heck didn’t I ask that question in the first place? It was simple. But typical, Nora had to do things the hard, long, slow, difficult, teeth-grinding way.
Of course.
“You know where they are and didn’t think to tell us over dinner?” I said a little too loudly. Yes, the woman had harbored information, but it didn’t give me the liberty to be rude. “I’m sorry,” I muttered.
Roth put his hand on my thigh under the table, trying to soothe me.
“Not to worry, Nora. We hoped one day you would come into your own. Or, in your case, your mates would be the water your magic needed to grow.” Mable’s smile was almost Buddha like.
“My mates?” I asked.
“Yes. Haven’t they told you?” She looked at Roth and Danger who were suddenly sheepish.
“Told me what?”
Danger leaned down to speak in my ear. “It is conversation to be had in private, kotyonok. We are finishing eating. Then we have to get back to school. Brother is coming to be with you.”
My insides went to complete mush as I debated which brother he meant, but I didn’t have the gumption to ask.
I would never tell them, but I missed Syn the most. Mostly because it had been weeks since I’d seen him and there were things that needing to be spoken between us.
“Okay.” All those thoughts inside my head and okay was the only thing I could think of to say. Genius.
“Eat up and then find them, Nora. This demon, the one who haunts you and Sharon… It is simply a minion for the big ones. Think of him as a taste of what’s out there. If you don’t learn to use your powers now, against this one, you won’t stand a chance against the rest.”
Fine. After the spiel about demons coming after me, I could stomach only three bites of egg, but had to finish my orange juice at the coaxing of Danger who used those bedroom eyes to sway me.
Damn him.
“Let’s go.” We packed up the truck and said our goodbyes to Mable. Before I saw him, I closed my eyes at the sensations rolling over my skin. Fury was near. His all-male scent seeped into my senses, causing my entire body to alight with joy.
“Mate, it is being my turn to watch you. Brothers need to go back to school. We are finding parents today, da?”
I knew they communicated with each other. “You’ve been talking about me.” It wasn’t a question, and while we’d had the conversation about brothers and mates and dirty little secrets, and mostly I knew they wouldn’t discuss such personal things each other, the thought niggled in my mind. Fury walked over to me and kissed my temple, pulling me near while inhaling the scent of my hair. Typical male shifter. I loved every second of it.
“Only updating about parents and demons. Never anything else. You are trusting me.”
I did. My brain got in the way.
“Yes.” There was a lingering goodbye to each of the other brothers.
